Protecting Implantable Medical Devices From Electromagnetic Interference

Protecting Implantable Medical Devices From Electromagnetic Interference

Abstract: The continuous advancement of medical device technology has led to a dramatic increase in the number of implantable devices that utilize onboard electronics. For example, devices used to treat cardiac arrhythmia — including pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) — frequently contain sensors to monitor heartbeats, onboard memory to record that data, processors to determine which therapy is required, and circuitry to generate either electrical impulses or shocks to correct the heart’s operation. In the U.S. alone, more than 300,000 cardiac arrhythmia devices — which include pacemakers and ICDs — are implanted each year. Neurostimulator implants – such as spinal cord stimulators, which are used to treat chronic pain – are also increasing as new products reach the market.

Evaluating Tantalum Electrolytics As Replacements For MLCCs In High Capacitance Applications

Evaluating Tantalum Electrolytics As Replacements For MLCCs In High Capacitance Applications

Abstract: Over the years, ceramic capacitors have been used interchangeably with tantalum in many applications, class II ceramics being the one electrostatic technology that can achieve the high capacitance values typically associated with electrolytic capacitors. But because of MLCC shortages, we are currently at a point where designers are reconsidering electrolytic capacitors for applications that had switched to class II ceramic in recent years. However, migrating circuit designs from MLCCs to tantalum electrolytics requires an understanding of multiple issues that impact how these different styles of capacitors will perform in the intended application. This article discusses the key parameters that differentiate these two capacitor categories in the various roles they play in power supply applications (bypassing, filtering, decoupling, bulk hold

EMI Filtering for High Reliability Applications

EMI Filtering for High Reliability Applications

EMI Filtering for High-Reliability Applications Amanda Ison KYOCERA AVX Components Corporation Electromagnetic interference (EMI), or electrical noise, is generated by everything from cellphones to solar flares and can make accurate signal transmission as difficult as trying to have a clear conversation in a noisy room. To improve signal clarity in electronic circuits, device designers turn to EMI suppression filters. Effective EMI filtering is necessary for almost every modern electronic device, including devices that generate their own EMI, as well as devices that are sensitive to EMI within their environment, and is especially important in high-reliability applications that utilize lower-power signals and have strict signal fidelity demands. High-reliability EMI filters are designed to consistently meet or exceed performance requirements and are
